Choose an ENERGY STAR room air purifier

Why? A room air purifier can be a major energy consumer in your home. If operated continuously, it can use more electricity than a new refrigerator!  When shopping for an air purifier, choose an ENERGY STAR® qualified model.
What to look for:
  • The ENERGY STAR label. Qualified models are just as effective at removing dust, pollen, and other particles from the air, but use up to 40% less energy than conventional models. This means you'll save immediately on operating costs.
  • A high Clean-Air Delivery Rate (CADR). CADR measures how quickly the filter cleans the air, and a higher number is better. Look for a CADR of at least 100.
  • An appropriate size for your room.
  • A High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter. This will catch even the finest particles. Note that HEPA filters must be replaced annually.
