Upgrade to a Level 2 electric vehicle charger
A Level 2 (240V) electric vehicle (EV) charger will allow you to charge up to six times faster than the Level 1 charger that came with your car. This allows you to be more flexible with your charging schedule. On average, Level 2 charging is also slightly more efficient than Level 1 charging.
How it works:
- Think about whether you want a plug-in or hardwired installation. The hardwired types are more permanent (they require an electrician to move them), but they tend to have an easier installation process. Plug-in versions can be moved more easily.
- In most cases, you'll have to hire an electrician to install the appropriate type of outlet, which is the same kind of outlet used for dryers.
- You can purchase a Level 2 EV charging station online and find buying guidance at energystar.gov. Make sure it has been safety tested by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (e.g. ETL mark or UL mark).
